GETTING AROUND WITH

BEACH ROSE BICYCLES

Bicycling is the best way to explore Block Island! Travel back roads, visit historic landmarks and breeze to the beach. Block Island is just 3 miles wide and 7 miles long (16.5 miles of roads) an excellent size to tour by bicycle. Every bend reveals a different scene. Biking in the fresh sea air you will notice nature’s special details, the fragrance of wild roses and sound of ocean waves.

Overlooking picturesque rolling fields the island is known for,
Beach Rose Bicycles is the perfect place to begin your site-seeing adventure!

Begin your ride at Beach Rose Bicycles and you will be on your way to the majestic Mohegan Bluffs and historic Southeast Lighthouse. Turn left onto High Street to reach Pilot Hill Road. This gravel road will take you to Mohegan Trail. Continue left to reach Payne Overlook. Enjoy the breathtaking view and famed stairway to the beach 150 feet below. A little further along is Block Island’s Victorian Southeast Lighthouse with a museum of its fascinating history and spiral stair up its tower. Complete this smaller loop of 3 miles (approximately a half hour ride) by biking through town and turning right onto Corn Neck Road to Crescent Beach where fine sand and clear ocean await. Sunbath and swim or continue biking 4 miles north and walk the shore to the historic North Lighthouse and Sandy Point. There ocean currents from east and west collide forming a strong riptide. Seals are often seen fishing or lounging on the point. The island’s northern most point is a unique site, yet do not venture onto the sandbar or wade as the current could briskly sweep a person or dog out to sea.

Bicycling is an excellent way to reach Block Island’s nature preserves with 28 miles of Greenway Trails. If you choose to begin on Spring Street and bike the whole southern loop (7 miles, approximately an hour and half ride) you can visit the Southeast Lighthouse and Mohegan Bluffs. Continue onward rounding the bend by Painted Rock. Lakeside Dive will take you by Fresh Pond and the stone monument to honor the Manissean Tribe. Turn left onto Cooneymus Road to reach Rodman’s Hollow, a glacial ravine. Walk its extensive Greenway Trail dipping down through the bayberry then ascending to a field and panoramic view of the island’s southern coast of bluffs and beach with waves cresting below. Round the bend onto West Side Road continuing this beautiful country ride. Coast down Blueberry Hill by the Great Salt Pond sprinkled with sail and motor yachts. Ride by the marinas where dockside restaurants offer local seafood. Turn left at the Police Station and Fire Barn. Beach Avenue will take you over a bridge to Corn Neck Road right across from Crescent Beach.

Bike north on Corn Neck Road. Beyond the dunes and beaches and you will reach a gravel road  to Clay Head Trail. Another favorite Greenway, Clay Head Trail winds by ponds and along the top of the Clay Head Bluffs. From the trail, you can walk a path to the peaceful northern shore of Crescent Beach. Continue riding north to reach Settler’s Rock where there is a picturesque view of Cow Cove and the North Light House. (Biking to Settler’s Rock and back would be a total of 9 miles from Beach Rose Bicycles, approximately an hour and a half ride).

If the bathing beach is your destination, Crescent Beach is an easy ride from Beach Rose Bicycles. Coast down High Street, round the statue and ride through town. Water Street bends becoming Dodge Street. At the four way intersection turn right onto Corn Neck Road where you can choose your point of access along the flat 3 mile stretch. The Town Beach House stands midway. North of Town Beach are favorite entrances to Scotch Beach and Mansion Beach.
